Explore the extraordinary landscapes of Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. This 3-day adventure visits the colourful geothermal fields of Dallol, the vast salt flats of Lake Asale, the traditional salt-mining sites around Ragad, and the active Erta Ale Volcano with its remarkable lava lake. Covering the remote Afar region between Semera, Ahmed Ela, Lake Afdera, and Erta Ale, the journey showcases dramatic desert scenery and unique geological wonders. What makes this tour truly exceptional is the opportunity to witness vibrant hydrothermal formations, centuries-old salt caravan traditions, and one of the world’s few permanent lava lakes in a single expedition.

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Semera – Ahmed Ela

Begin your adventure with a flight from Addis Ababa to Semera. Upon arrival, meet your guide and travel through the dramatic Afar landscape, characterised by volcanic rock formations, arid plains, and scattered palm oases.

Visit the village of Ahmed Ela to gain insight into the traditional way of life of the Afar people. Continue to Lake Asale, where you can walk across dazzling salt flats, float in naturally saline waters, and enjoy a spectacular sunset over the shimmering white landscape.

Overnight: Camping at Ahmed Ela

Day 2: Dallol – Erta Ale Volcano

Depart early for Ragad (also known as Asebo), where you will witness the centuries-old tradition of salt mining. Watch workers cut salt blocks by hand and load them onto camel caravans for transport across the desert.

Continue to Dallol, one of the hottest and lowest places on Earth. Explore its striking landscape of vibrant yellow, green, and orange mineral deposits, bubbling sulfur springs, and steaming geothermal activity.

After lunch, travel to Erta Ale. In the evening, trek to the crater rim and witness the mesmerising glow of its active lava lake—one of the planet's most spectacular natural phenomena.

Overnight: Camping at Erta Ale

Day 3: Erta Ale – Lake Afdera – Semera – Addis Ababa

After breakfast, descend from the volcano and continue to Lake Afdera, a major centre of Ethiopia’s salt industry. Observe extensive salt pans created through solar evaporation and learn about the economic importance of salt production in the region.

Following lunch, return to Semera for your flight back to Addis Ababa, bringing your incredible Danakil Depression adventure to a close.
