Discover the Bale Mountains: Ethiopia's Hidden Alpine Wilderness

Venture into one of Africa's most remote and biodiverse mountain ranges on this immersive 4-day safari experience. The Bale Mountains offer a rare opportunity to explore pristine alpine ecosystems, encounter endemic wildlife found nowhere else on Earth, and experience the raw beauty of Ethiopia's highlands in intimate comfort.

The Experience

This safari takes you far beyond the typical tourist circuit into a landscape of dramatic escarpments, misty moorlands, and crystalline mountain streams. Rising above 4,000 meters, the Bale Mountains create a unique ecosystem where Afro-alpine vegetation meets wildlife found nowhere else in the world—including the endangered Ethiopian wolf, mountain nyala, and the walia ibex. Your journey balances wildlife observation with cultural immersion, allowing you to witness both the natural wonders and the pastoral traditions of the highland communities.

Day 1: Arrival in Bale Mountains National Park – Dinsho

Bale Mountains National Park

Upon arrival at Dinsho, the headquarters of Bale Mountains National Park, begin your adventure with a guided nature walk through the park's beautiful juniper and Hagenia woodlands. This area is renowned for its rich biodiversity and offers excellent opportunities to observe several of Ethiopia's endemic and endangered mammals, including the Mountain nyala, Menelik's bushbuck, warthog, Bohor reedbuck, and grey duiker.

The forests are also a paradise for bird enthusiasts, with excellent chances to spot Ethiopian endemic species such as the Abyssinian flycatcher, Wattled ibis, and Abyssinian catbird.

After your first introduction to the park's remarkable wildlife and landscapes, transfer to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Sanetti Plateau – The Roof of Bale Mountains

Bale Mountains National Park

After breakfast, depart for the spectacular Sanetti Plateau, the highest continuous plateau in Africa and one of Ethiopia's most extraordinary natural landscapes. As you ascend into the Afro-alpine ecosystem, keep watch for soaring raptors, falcons, and the elusive Ethiopian wolf, the world's rarest canid and an iconic symbol of Bale Mountains National Park.

Travel across sweeping moorlands dotted with giant lobelias, alpine lakes, and dramatic highland scenery while passing near Tullu Dimtu (4,377 metres), Ethiopia's second-highest mountain. The breathtaking scenery and unique alpine environment make this one of the highlights of the safari.

Return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Upon arrival, explore the forest on a guided walk through towering bamboo groves and dense woodland leading to scenic waterfalls. This unique ecosystem provides habitat for the endemic Bale monkey, black-and-white colobus monkeys, forest hogs, bush pigs, and, with a bit of luck, the elusive leopard.

After exploring Harenna Forest, begin your scenic return drive across the Sanetti Plateau, making stops at key wildlife viewing areas for additional chances to encounter Ethiopian wolves and endemic bird species.
