Discover Ancient Wonders Through Your Lens

Step into one of Africa's most sacred and visually stunning destinations. This three-day photographic journey takes you deep into the heart of Lalibela, where medieval churches carved from living rock rise from the Ethiopian highlands like monuments frozen in time. Combine this with the serene beauty of Yemrehehanna Kirsto—a hidden gem nestled in dramatic mountain terrain—for a comprehensive exploration of Ethiopia's most iconic religious sites.

The Experience

This is photography-focused travel at its finest. You'll navigate the otherworldly landscape of Lalibela, capturing the intricate facades and underground chambers of eleven monolithic churches while experiencing the living spiritual traditions that still define these sacred spaces. Golden hour light transforms the carved stone into something almost surreal, while the surrounding terrain offers dramatic backdrops of terraced highlands and misty valleys.

Day 1: Arrival in Lalibela – Exploring the Northern Rock-Hewn Churches

Lalibela

Upon arrival in Lalibela, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel. After a short rest, begin exploring one of Ethiopia's most treasured UNESCO World Heritage Sites—the remarkable Northern Cluster of the Rock-Hewn Churches, masterpieces carved directly from solid volcanic rock during the 12th and 13th centuries under the reign of King Lalibela.

Your guided tour includes visits to:

  • Biete Medhane Alem – The largest monolithic church in the world, renowned for its impressive architecture and the revered Lalibela Cross.

  • Biete Maryam – Considered the oldest and one of the most beautifully decorated churches, featuring remarkable frescoes, intricate carvings, and symbolic reliefs.

  • Biete Golgotha–Selassie – One of Lalibela's holiest sanctuaries, famous for its sacred significance, ancient artwork, and finely carved interior.

  • Biete Debre Sina and Biete Mikael – Twin churches connected by narrow passageways and admired for their unique architectural design.

  • Biete Giyorgis (Church of St. George) – The most iconic of Lalibela's churches, carved in the shape of a perfect Greek cross and regarded as the masterpiece of the entire complex.

After your guided tour, return to your hotel for a relaxing evening. Those interested may also enjoy an optional traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony or an evening of local music and cultural performances.

Day 2: Southern Rock-Hewn Churches & Yemrehanna Kristos Monastery

Lalibela

After breakfast, continue discovering Lalibela's extraordinary religious heritage with a visit to the Southern Cluster of the Rock-Hewn Churches, each reflecting exceptional craftsmanship and centuries of spiritual devotion.

Highlights include:

  • Biete Amanuel – believed to have served as the royal chapel, admired for its finely carved exterior and elegant architectural style.

  • Biete Abba Libanos – A remarkable church carved almost entirely from a single block of rock, remaining attached to the cliff on only one side.

  • Biete Gabriel-Rufael – Thought to have originally been a royal palace before being converted into a church, featuring impressive courtyards and defensive structures.

Later, travel to the magnificent Yemrehanna Kristos Monastery, located approximately 45 km from Lalibela. Hidden inside a natural cave, this beautifully preserved 11th-century monastery predates the rock-hewn churches and is renowned for its distinctive Axumite architecture, combining layers of stone and wood with richly decorated interiors.

After lunch, return to Lalibela, where you will have free time to browse local markets, visit artisan workshops, or shop for traditional Ethiopian handicrafts before returning to your hotel.
