Meskel Festival – Demera Bonfire Ceremony

Experience one of Ethiopia's most spectacular religious celebrations during the vibrant Meskel Festival. Thousands of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians gather at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa to witness the lighting of the magnificent Demera bonfire. Priests dressed in colourful robes chant ancient hymns while worshippers in traditional white clothing fill the square with prayer, music, and celebration. The bonfire is crowned with a cross decorated with Adey Abeba, yellow seasonal flowers symbolising hope and the discovery of the True Cross. According to tradition, the smoke from the fire guided Saint Helena to the location of the True Cross of Jesus Christ. As the flames rise, the square comes alive with singing, dancing, and devotion, creating an unforgettable cultural and spiritual experience. Meskel offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Ethiopia's rich heritage and warm hospitality.
