Agua Clara Lock
The great construction of the Expanded Panama Canal continues to marvel local residents and visitors. Some interesting facts are related to the amount of material utilized. For example, the 192 thousand tons of steel required for the construction of Third Set of Locks could be used to build 19 Eiffel Tower.
Fort San Lorenzo
Castillo de San Lorenzo was first authorized in 1564. But like many other works of the Spanish crown in the Indies it took forty years before any construction began. The site selected was high on a cliff, where canons could effectively protect the entrance to the Charges River and offered an unencumbered view of the ocean for miles. The first fort, like all those of early Panama, used ancient double palisade techniques, where two opposing wooded walls would be in filled with earth and then roofed with woven reed and palm thatch. This type of construction had to be constantly repaired due to the many months of rain and numerous pirate assaults.
This is a day tour that includes pick up from your hotel in Panama city at 8:00AM. Our driver/guide will start with a visit at the Agua Clara center which has replaced the Gatun lock visit, the center opened in 2016. "Is the Panama Canal Train actually running some trips in December? I see they ran a couple of special ones in October and November, but your website makes it appear that you'll do the Panama Canal Train/Agua Clara Canal Lock/Colon Fort regularly. We're interested in the trip if it's going to run."
Response from organiser:
We were told that in December this tour will start running again after the train has been idle for two years. It has been frustrating for us but there is no set date in December. It could go until next year in January. We will contact you when the train is running to Colon.
