Embark on an unforgettable 3-day gorilla tracking adventure deep in the heart of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwestern Uganda. This extraordinary journey takes you through one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests, home to nearly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. The highlight of the experience is an intimate, once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a habituated wild mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat just metres away from these magnificent and gentle giants. Travelling through the dramatic Kigezi highlands, this short but perfectly paced safari combines breathtaking scenery, rich local culture, and one of the most remarkable wildlife experiences on the planet.
Day 1: Kampala / Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Depart Kampala or Entebbe early in the morning and embark on a scenic road journey southwest towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Travel through the breathtaking Kigezi highlands, often called the "Switzerland of Africa," passing through towns of Mbarara and Kabale with their rolling green hills and terraced farmlands. Stop and route for lunch at a local restaurant. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, check in and freshen up. Your guide will conduct an evening briefing to prepare you for the gorilla trek the following morning, covering what to expect, trekking etiquette, and UWA guidelines. Enjoy dinner and overnight at your lodge on the edge of Bwindi forest.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Rise early for breakfast before transferring to the Uganda Wildlife Authority park headquarters for the official gorilla trekking briefing at 8:00 am. You will be assigned to a gorilla family group alongside your UWA ranger guides and begin your trek into the ancient rainforest. The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the gorilla family's location deep in the forest. Once the gorillas are located, you will spend a magical and intimate 1 hour observing and photographing the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, an experience that very few people in the world ever get to have. After the trek, return to the trailhead and transfer back to your lodge for a well-earned lunch. The afternoon is free to relax, take a nature walk, or, optionally, visit a local Batwa pygmy community. Enjoy dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 3: Bwindi to Kampala / Entebbe
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and check out of the lodge. Begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe, retracing the scenic route through the Kigezi highlands. Stop and route for lunch and to visit local craft markets for souvenirs. Arrive in Kampala or Entebbe by early evening, marking the end of an unforgettable gorilla trekking adventure in the heart of Africa.
