Kiambethu tea farm is just 40 Minutes from the heart of Nairobi and Limuru and provides a tranquil insight into the life of a settler farm. A visit or a stay at Kiambethu tea farm makes a memorable time and it includes delicious meals, a visit to the indigenous forest, and insights into the making and growing of tea provided by the hosts.
The farm is located at 7000 feet above sea level and has lush acres of tea plantations that seem to vanish on the horizon. Two English families, Mitchell & McDonnell in the early 1900's, built the Estate. These families are said to be the first to have ventured into the tea business. You will also have a lecture on the area and about tea production. In the afternoon, a walk through the tea plantations and forests will display the conditions needed for the growth of tea.
You will be picked up from your hotel/residence/airport and arrive at 11 am. Over a cup of tea or coffee, learn the farm's history. The tea-making process is informally explained, followed by an opportunity to see the tea plantation.
Afterwards, walk into the indigenous forest accompanied by a resident Kenyan guide who will identify the plants and explain how they are traditionally used. Be on the lookout for the Colobus monkeys up close as you wander in the gardens - which are also home to a wide variety of birds and flowers.
Return later to the house to enjoy a pre-lunch drink on the verandah while taking the sweeping views across the tea fields to the Ngong Hills. Enjoy your three-course buffet lunch from a set menu prepared with vegetables from the garden and desserts topped with cream from the Herd of Channel Island cows.
