When thinking of antiquity we always think of Egypt or ancient Greece, sometimes of Babylon and Cartagenos...

To many it is a surprise that here, in Bulgaria, one can still take a walk and discover about even more ancient times and in the same time to enjoy a lively modern city with a particular charm.

Yes, this is Plovdiv - the European capital of culture for 2019!

In addition the Bachkovo monastery, the second biggest Orthodox one in Bulgaria, will reveal some interesting historical facts and beautiful murals and frescoes dating from 1604 and some even older...

This morning we will take an easy and very pleasant one-day tour to the oldest constantly inhabited city in Europe - Plovdiv!

You will be picked up from your accomodation and after approximately 2 hours on a highway we will reach the Bachkovo monastery. Nicely situated on the foot of Rhodope mountains, the monastery is stunning by its beautifully painted church and particularly with the reffectory room, where we can follow in detail the genealogical tree of Jesus Christ.

Just in time for a nice lunch break we will be in Plovdiv after a short drive from the monastery to the foot of the Old Town - situated on three of the seven hills (yes, just like Rome!), once being the fortified town of Philipopolis where the Eastern entrance gate street ruins from Philip II Macedonian still can be seen....

We are going to walk sightseeing for about 2 hours along the cobbled streets of this very different athmosphere and according to your interest we may visit one or two period houses, which used to belong to some of the richest families of Plovdiv merchants.

Then, we will walk next to the Djumaya mosque, as old 1394 and still active, you may like to visit it (no entrance fee), and then we will take a look at the ruims of the ancient Roman Stadium.

Many people enjoy having some free time along the longest pedestrian street in Europe so about 2 up to three hours can be your when probably you will like to try some tradition food and do some shopping (or window shopping).

We plan to start driving back to Sofia at 4pm and the estimated time of arrive there is around 6pm.
