Private tour (up to 4 persons) to Plovdiv, one of the world’s oldest cities. Discover Roman landmarks, colourful mosaics, Revival-era houses, and the lively Kapana district, where ancient history meets modern culture in a unique atmosphere.

Plovdiv is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with a history dating back to the 6th millennium BCE. What began as early Neolithic settlements later developed into thriving Thracian communities, and during Roman times, the city became a major provincial centre with impressive public buildings, wide streets, baths, and a vibrant urban life.

These historical layers are still clearly visible today. The Ancient Roman Theatre is among the best preserved in the world and continues to host performances, while the remains of the Roman Stadium, once holding tens of thousands of spectators, lie beneath the modern city centre, partially revealed along the main pedestrian street. The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis impresses with its vast floors of colourful early Christian mosaics, offering a vivid glimpse into Late Antique art and religion.

Plovdiv is equally famous for its Bulgarian Revival architecture in the Old Town. Elegant 18th–19th-century houses, with richly painted façades and beautifully crafted wooden interiors, once belonged to wealthy merchants and intellectuals. The Regional Ethnographic Museum, housed in one of the finest examples, presents traditional costumes, crafts, and everyday life from the past.

A visit to Kapana, the city’s creative district, adds a modern contrast. Once a craftsmen’s quarter, today it is a lively maze of narrow streets filled with cafés, galleries, artisan shops, and street art, giving Plovdiv its distinctive contemporary energy.

Shaped by Byzantine, medieval Bulgarian, Ottoman, and National Revival influences, Plovdiv has preserved its unique identity through the centuries. Today, it offers a rare blend of ancient ruins, historic architecture, and modern culture, making it one of Bulgaria’s most fascinating and vibrant cities.
