This convenient day trip from central Kathmandu is an easy way to get out of the city for a day and be immersed in ancient Newar culture.

Start in Bhaktapur, the old town area of which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can wander along lanes and through squares packed to the brim with architectural and artistic masterpieces. There’s a museum full of artistic treasures, a square where hand-thrown pottery is laid out to dry in the sun, and the spectacular multi-tiered Nayatapola Temple, among other riches. Continue on to Panauti, just outside the Kathmandu Valley, once a bustling commercial town, and now surrounded by farm land and rolling hills. Highlights in Panauti include the temple complex at Triveni Ghat, which includes one of the oldest and best-preserved temples in Nepal, as well as the mansions that reflect Panauti’s mercantile past. You can return to Kathmandu on the same day, or choose to spend the night in Panauti at the Panauti Community Homestay.
