Winter Bear Watching & Distillery Tour Near Brasov 7 hours

  • Private tour
  • Solo friendly
  • Family friendly
  • Eco Aware

Spend a memorable day trip near Brasov and get the chance to see the Eurasian brown bear (Ursus arctos arctos) in its natural habitat, from just a few meters away. You will also visit a local distillery where "palinka" is made in the nearby town of Sfantu Gheorghe.

Have lunch in a local restaurant in the area of Tusnad Bai. Optionally visit the nearby Szekler Museum for a brief history lesson (closed on Mondays).

In the morning, your guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Brasov.

After a 30 minute drive to the nearby city of Sfantu Gheorghe (St. George), you will visit a local palinka distillery. Palinka is a traditional strong spirit made out of different fruits, from plums to quinces, blueberry etc. The host will make a short tour of the facility and in the end, you will reach the distillery room, where you will see some state of the art equipment, used to make the famous Hungarian drink. To warm you up, you can taste some of the best types of palinka available there and you can even buy some.

Depending on your schedule, you can choose to visit the nearby Szekely National Museum where you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the local history from early ages to modern times. The visit is at your own expense (10 lei/ person and if you want an English museum guide, then it's another 20 lei/ group). The Szekely Museum is closed on Mondays, so you can visit the Prejmer Fortified Church instead (entrance included)

You will then leave for Tusnad Bai / Balvanyos area where you will have lunch in a local restaurant. It will be an ”all you can eat” lunch, so you can taste a lot of local dishes and goodies.

In the afternoon, you will meet the ranger and after a short briefing about safety regulations, you will go together deep in the forest. After a 400 meter hike, you will arrive at a specially designed bear hide. The viewing quality is the best you can find in Romania.

The hide is designed by a professional wildlife photographer for those who want to see the bears from a very close distance. Also, if you are interested in wildlife photography, you should know that you will be staying at ground level so you can achieve that blurred background when taking photos of the bears. Moreover, because the hide is equipped with a one-way mirror window, the animals cannot see you inside, thus offering you the opportunity to capture amazing shots from a very close distance.

Once inside, it's just a waiting game. Wait quietly until the bears arrive. Sometimes, you can even see wild boars or wolves. To keep you warm inside, you will be served with free palinka.

Because the activity takes place in the wild, we cannot guarantee 100% that you will see bears, especially during the winter. However, if you don't see any bears, you will be partially refunded.

In the end, you will return to the car and you will get back to Brasov. Your guide will drop you off at your accommodation or at a local restaurant if you want to have dinner.
