3-Day Adventure In Harghita & Nature Wonders 3 days

Day 1 - Arrival at the Base of Harghita Mountain, Peak Hike, Waterfall and Brown Bear Watching

Meeting Point: Base of Harghita Mountain, Izvoare village.

Tip: We recommend arriving early to enjoy all of the day’s highlights fully.

Aim to arrive around 10:00–10:30 am. to get settled in and start the adventure. Welcome to the breathtaking foothills of Harghita Mountain, a region renowned for its crisp alpine air and expansive forested landscapes. Upon arrival, check in at our cosy mountain lodge, which provides easy access to the hiking trails that await you. Take a moment to unpack, refresh and get ready by preparing your hiking gear: comfortable boots, layered clothing, a photo camera, water and snacks.

Hike to Madarasi Harghita Peak (1,801 m)

We’ll begin our hike on well-marked trails, winding through dense spruce forests, alpine meadows and rocky paths. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating facts about the local flora, fauna and the cultural significance of Harghita Mountain. As we reach the peak, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic 360° view, revealing the rolling ridges of the Eastern Carpathians. On clear days, you might even spot distant volcanic formations. Take some time at the summit to capture photos, enjoy light snacks and soak in the breathtaking horizon.

Optional Waterfall

If time permits, we’ll take a short detour to visit a nearby waterfall. Nestled in the forest, this peaceful cascade offers the perfect opportunity for scenic photography and a refreshing moment of tranquillity.

Picnic / Lunch Pack

Enjoy a rustic lunch either along the trail or back at the base. The menu will feature authentic Transylvanian specialities, offering you a true taste of the region.

Brown Bear Watching in the Wild – The Highlight of the Day

In the evening, we’ll head out with an experienced wildlife guide to a specially designed observation hide deep within the forest. Here, you’ll learn about the behaviour, conservation efforts and seasonal habits of Transylvania’s brown bears, as well as their role in the ecosystem. It’s a truly extraordinary experience to observe these majestic animals in their natural habitat, accompanied by a forest ranger.

After the thrilling bear-watching experience, we’ll return to the lodge for a delicious dinner and a relaxing evening. Share stories, browse through photos from the day, and unwind in the tranquil mountain atmosphere.

Day 2 - Bicaz Gorges-Hășmaș National Park & Red Lake

Start your day with a hearty mountain breakfast — eggs, local cheeses, fresh bread and herbal tea. After breakfast, we’ll transfer to Bicaz Gorges-Hășmaș National Park. Enjoy a scenic drive through rolling hills and small villages, with short stops for photo opportunities along the way.

Discover Hidden Hiking Trails around Red Lake & Bicaz Gorge

We'll embark on two lesser-known hiking trails that unveil untouched natural beauty. Explore tranquil forests, towering rock formations and hidden viewpoints. Walk along the shores of Red Lake (Lacul Roșu), renowned for its still waters dotted with the remains of submerged tree trunks, formed after a 19th-century landslide. Continue into the Bicaz Gorge (Cheile Bicazului), where towering limestone walls rise dramatically on either side of the winding trail. Take a break from hiking and enjoy your lunch pack surrounded by panoramic mountain scenery.

After a day of exploration, we’ll head back to the lodge for a well-deserved dinner and a relaxing evening.

Day 3 - Wildlife Tracking

In the morning, after breakfast, we set off into the heart of the forest together with an experienced ranger. With a bit of luck, this adventure offers the chance to spot some of the most iconic wildlife of the Carpathians: bears, wild boars, deer, and roe deer. On rare occasions, even wolves or the elusive lynx may appear. The best time for wildlife encounters is from early morning until late afternoon, when the forest truly comes alive. Since these are vast, continuous forests, sightings are never guaranteed. Keep in mind that we are in the wild. Our specialised guide will lead you to areas where these animals have been observed before, greatly increasing the chances of encountering them. From early morning until midday and again in the late afternoon, we may have the unique opportunity to watch bears in their natural habitat — not from a bear hide, but by tracking them directly in the forest. For safety, we will always be accompanied by a professional forest ranger.

This 3-day adventure through the Carpathians offers the perfect balance of mountain exploration, wildlife encounters, and cultural immersion. From the panoramic peaks of Harghita and the dramatic cliffs of Bicaz Gorge to the quiet shores of Red Lake, every moment is filled with raw natural beauty.
