Enjoy a pleasant boat ride down the Irrawaddy River to Mingun, known for the largest unfinished pagoda in the whole world. Explore the highlights of Myanmar's most rapidly developing city afterwards.
Today you take the boat up to Mingun. After an approximately 1-hour boat ride over the mighty Irrawaddy River, you reach the jetty close to the ancient city. From here, you join a short tuk-tuk ride to visit Mingun's majestic sights.
Mingun is known for its huge impressive pagoda, which remains unfinished. Originally the pagoda was supposed to be the highest in the world, but it was partially destroyed by an earthquake. Nearby you also visit the Mingun Bell, which received its own 'museum' after the earthquake, and the beautiful Hsinbyume Pagoda, which is very different from any other typical pagodas in Myanmar. Hsinbyume Pagoda is known to be one of the most beautiful and popular photo motifs in the country.
By tuk-tuk, you will head back to the jetty to enjoy another delightful boat trip back to Mandalay.
Upon arrival in Mandalay, visit the sacred Mahamuni Pagoda, which is a major pilgrimage site located in the southwest of the city. Afterward, visit the Shwenandaw Monastery, which was built in 1878 by King Thibaw Min. It is mostly known for its artistic wood carvings.
The Kuthodaw Pagoda is the world's largest book as it is surrounded by 729 stone slabs in which Buddhist scriptures were engraved.
If time permits, we walk up to Mandalay Hill, known for its abundance of pagodas and monasteries. The panoramic view of Mandalay from the top of Mandalay Hill makes it worth to attempt a climb up its stairways.
