Enjoy a full-day tour of Alexandria’s most iconic landmarks. Visit the historic Pompey’s Pillar, explore the fascinating Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, and discover the rich history of Egypt’s Mediterranean capital. After lunch, continue to Qaitbay Citadel, built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, before visiting the renowned Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the modern revival of the legendary Great Library. We’ll pick you up from the Alexandria hotel/Port and drive for private guided tours of its most famous sites.
We’ll start with Pompey’s Pillar: a 30-metre-high Roman triumphal column that overlooks the ruins of the once-glorious ancient city of Rhakotis - the settlement upon which Alexandria was built. Erected by the emperor Diocletian in AD 291, it was renamed by locals in memory of the great Roman general after his murder at the hands of Cleopatra’s brother.
Drive to the Catacombs of Kom al-Shokafa, not only one of the last major constructions dedicated to the religion of ancient Egypt but also its largest Greco-Roman burial site. Originally constructed as a private family crypt which would have contained a rotunda, triclinium (a formal dining room where mourners would pay their last respects) and principal tomb chamber, the following 3 centuries saw it develop into a vast necropolis holding more than 300 remains.
Take lunch before driving to Qaitbay’s Citadel for his 15th-century fort, built on (and utilising some of its stones) the site of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse - one of the wonders of the ancient world.
Drive to Bibliotheca Alexandrina for the modern version of the Great Library of Alexandria, home to the world’s second largest reading room and four excellent museums (Antiquities, Manuscript, Sadat and History of Science).
Return to your Alexandria hotel/Port.
