Comandancia De La Plata

From the viewpoint of Alto del Naranjo a 3km / 2mi trail leads to the Comandancia de la Plata, the 1950s headquarters of Fidel Castro. The only way to get to this location is to walk, but it is not strenuous and should only take about an hour one way. Visitors must first obtain a permit from the rangers in Villa Santo Domingo. On site at the Comandancia de la Plata is a museum, a small 'hospital', command post, and the Radio Rebelde (in the half way to the headquarters) where Che Guevara did his broadcasts. The setting here is beautiful with lush dense forest and rugged mountains.

The Alto del Naranjo view point can be reached either by a walking a 5km / 3mi trial or with an off road vehicle and does not require a permit.

In 2007 the entry cost was $10 per person + $15 for the guide (obligatory but shared by all group members) + $5 per camera (per person) if you wanted to take pictures. So it was quite costly but worth a go as on the way the guide showed lots of interesting plants and animals species. We could see the cuban tody, tocororo (which is Cuban national bird) and glasswing butterfly - an endemic specie which is seen only on Carribean
